I think the real choice here is between Philip Glass’s Einstein on the Beach and a stupid Pepsi jingle.
Also, who else forgot about the Pepsi Girl?
Cyrus Chestnut @ Dizzy’s Club: Nice. Wanted it to go so much longer, but at least it definitely gave me a hunger to see some more high-grade jazz in the city. Just being able to see everybody play right there in front of you, see how they’re interacting, and get a feel for how they move together and individually, it’s really a priceless experience. Oh yeah and the music was...
Looks like it’s gonna be Cyrus Chestnut at Dizzy’s Club.
Let's Go Deleting!
As nice as it is to have these ridiculous amounts of music that we all have, every now and then we must part with some things just to maintain the idea that on some level we are people with discerning tastes. Here’s what I’m deleting today!
Islands - Return to the Sea - As much as I enjoyed The Unicorns (from whom this band sprung), this album was just tediously bland and the...
DQed from reviewing Squarepusher
John Bush of AllMusicGuide, you are no longer allowed to review Squarepusher albums. You have demonstrated a complete lack of comprehension of his music with this one ridiculous quote in your review for Just A Souvenir:
“Granted, his ideas wouldn’t sound half as astonishing if they were slowed to normal speed, but they’d still sound at least half-crazy.”
What!?
Do you...
If you had to pick one of the following which would you pick:
Uri Caine Trio at Village Vanguard
Cyrus Chestnut Quintet at Dizzy’s Club
Lee Konitz Big Band at Jazz Standard
Jay-Z’s president is black. What a coincidence — mine is too!
I officially recommend My Bloody Valentine 3D. It’s the first of the modern 3D movies I’ve seen, and my guess is that it’s also the grossest/scariest/campiest, and thus, the most fun. Of course, you should definitely see it with friends, and you should definitely joke it as much as possible. 2 thumbs coming RIGHT AT YOU!!!!!
Also, it’s the best new movies I’ve...
Why do so many jazz reissues feel the need to put multiple takes of the same song in a row? I don’t mind having the alternate takes. Just put them at the end. Thelonious Monk 5 by Monk by 5, I’m looking at you! Three takes of “Played Twice” in a row is ridiculous. You’re messing up the album flow! Ughies.
My Exceedingly Long 2008 Year End List
So the 2008 is but a mile marker in the rear-view at this point, but I told enough people that I was going to put up a “Look Back On What I Was Enjoying For The First Time In 2008” that I kind of had to make it happen. I should say, this was one of my favorite years of music listening ever, so this is probably longer than you’d like. I recommend breaking it into chunks. So...
